They are two different documents that share one name, and that is the whole problem. One tells you which body a size was designed for. The other tells you what the item itself measures when you lay it flat on a table. Both are legitimate, both get published under the heading “size chart”, and most charts do not say which one you are looking at.
The gap between the two numbers has a name, ease, and it can run in either direction. Once you know which document is in front of you and roughly how much ease to expect, a size chart becomes usable. Until then you are comparing two numbers that were never meant to be compared.
Two charts, one name
The clearest statement of the problem comes from a clothing manufacturer rather than a retailer. Hook & Eye, who make garments for UK labels, put the shopper’s question this way: are the measurements provided by the retailer “referring to the measurements of the actual GARMENT I will be buying? Or are they BODY measurements that then match to an appropriate clothing size? There’s a distinct difference between the two and if this isn’t made clear, it can be super confusing.”
The sewing world has had separate names for these for decades, which is why sewists find retail charts maddening. Sussex Seamstress explains that the finished measurements chart “tells you the measurements of the completed garment. So this chart is all about the garment, whereas the sizing chart is” about the body. And the conclusion that retail almost never acts on: “both charts are needed to make the best sizing decision for you.”
From the production side it is the same split. Mypacklove, who supply apparel labelling, describe garment specifications as detailing “the finished dimensions of the clothing piece itself, for example the chest width of a shirt, not the body measurements the garment is intended to fit.”
How confusing is the vocabulary? Confusing enough to catch people who do this professionally. TAAS, an apparel development consultancy, writes in a single sentence that brands “typically develop clothing size charts that accurately reflect the garment measurements” and that “these charts help customers choose the right size based on their body measurements.” Both halves are individually true of some chart somewhere. Together they describe two different documents as though they were one. That is not a criticism of the firm, whose material is otherwise useful and supplies the size mapping later in this article. It is the clearest available evidence that the ambiguity is baked into the language, not just into bad storefronts.
The number between them is called ease
Seven things follow from the distinction, and the first is the one that resolves most bad purchases.
1. Ease, with the arithmetic
The most useful explanation on this entire subject sits on a 293-word page, which is worth noting before anyone equates length with substance. Sizechart.shop define it plainly: “Ease is the extra room between your body and the garment. It’s why a shirt with a 42 inch chest fits someone with a 38 inch chest. Without ease, clothes would be skin-tight and impossible to move in.”
They reduce it to a formula. Garment measurement minus body measurement equals ease, illustrated as a 40 inch garment chest against a 36 inch body chest. Their bands run from close-fitting up to “5 inches or more” for relaxed and oversized pieces, with a standard regular fit somewhere in the middle.
Here is the error that arithmetic prevents. A shopper with a 38 inch chest opens a garment chart, sees 42 inches, concludes the shirt is four inches too big, and sizes down. They have just removed the room the designer put there deliberately, and the smaller shirt will pull across the back. The four inches were not a mistake in the chart. They were the fit.
2. Ease has a sign, and stretch inverts it
This is where the rule you just learned becomes dangerous, and no page on this search puts both halves in one place.
Hook & Eye note that “skintight garments (stretch items) will be smaller than your body measurements.” Negative ease. A pair of leggings designed for a 36 inch hip may measure 32 inches flat, because the fabric is expected to stretch to fit and the tension is what holds the garment in place.
So the garment number sits above the body number on wovens and below it on stretch. A shopper who has correctly absorbed the previous section and generalised it into “the garment number should be bigger than mine” will now look at correctly-sized activewear, swimwear or base layers, decide they are far too small, and size up into something that sags. Mypacklove explain why the two cases differ: “fabrics with stretch allow for a closer fit and more tolerance, while non-stretch woven fabrics require more carefully calculated ease for comfort and movement.”
The practical version is that ease is not a number you can memorise. It is a number that depends on the fabric and on what the garment is supposed to do, which is why a chart that gives measurements without saying whether the item stretches has still not told you enough.
3. Why the size number itself tells you nothing
Hook & Eye illustrate this with two garments photographed on the same person. “Both tops are a size 8, and both fit me perfectly, but in very different ways. The top item is a boxy cropped tee made from 100 percent cotton, intended to be worn as an oversized piece.”
Same wearer. Same number on the label. Both correct. Materially different measurements. That is not a failure of either garment and it is not sloppiness by the brand. A boxy oversized tee and a fitted top are supposed to measure differently, because they are supposed to sit differently on the body.
Which means the label is not describing you. It is describing a garment, and a different garment wearing the same label can be inches away. Any advice that starts “find your size” has skipped the step where sizes turn out not to be a property of people.
4. Vanity sizing, and why your size drifts between brands
The label is unstable across brands as well as across garments, and some of that drift is deliberate. Sussex Seamstress is blunt about it: “many shops use vanity sizing so we feel good when we can zip up a smaller size than we would be wearing at other retailers. So the idea that your size can be defined as a single, fixed number is not only unhelpful” but actively misleading.
TAAS add that sizing “can vary between brands and even within the same brand for different clothing categories”, which is the part shoppers find hardest to believe until it happens to them. The same label’s outerwear and its jersey can be graded from different base measurements, because they were developed at different times by different people against different fit intentions.
There is a mechanical reason behind the drift, and knowing it makes the whole thing less mysterious. Mypacklove describe how a size range is built: one base size is patterned first, then “grading is the process used to create the patterns for the full size range”, scaling up for large and extra large and down for small. Every size except the base is therefore an extrapolation, and the increments chosen at that step are a judgement call by whoever did the grading. Two brands grading from the same base measurement with different increments produce different garments at the same label, and one brand grading two categories separately produces the same effect inside its own catalogue.
This is why there is no brand conversion table on this page. Converting between two labels that both carry no reliable information produces a third piece of information that is equally unreliable, and it would go stale every season. Measurements convert. Labels do not.
5. When your measurements land in two different sizes
Very common, and the charts rarely say what to do about it. You measure, and your chest points at a medium while your waist points at a large, or the reverse.
Sussex Seamstress give the sewing answer, which is to grade between the two sizes, cutting to one measurement at the chest and blending to another at the waist. That is available to you if you sew or if you have access to a tailor, and it is genuinely the correct fix.
If you are just buying, the usable version is to choose based on what can be changed afterwards and what cannot. Taking in a waist or shortening a hem is straightforward and cheap. Letting out a shoulder seam or adding room across the chest generally is not, because there is no spare fabric there and the seam construction fights you. So size to the measurement that is hardest to alter, and plan to adjust the easy one. That single heuristic converts a stuck decision into a routine one.
6. The measurement shoppers ask for versus the one they can use
Ask shoppers and they say body measurements. The Reddit thread ranking second on this search puts it directly: “I actually prefer that the size chart has ACCURATE body measurements, rather than garment measurements.” A sewing group on Facebook splits, with most commenters recommending body measurements while others prefer finished garment measurements. Even people who measure for a living do not agree, which should lower everyone’s confidence that there is one right answer.
But there is an asymmetry in what you can act on. To use a body chart you have to measure yourself accurately, which is harder than it sounds alone with a tape measure, and then you still have to guess how much ease the designer intended. To use a garment chart you can take a garment you already own and love, lay it flat, measure it in two minutes, and compare like with like. No ease assumption is required, because the garment you own already embodies the ease you like.
So stated preference and usable answer point in opposite directions. That is not a contradiction to resolve by picking a winner. It is an argument for publishing both.
7. What a storefront should actually publish
Sizechart.shop state the recommendation and every commercial source on this search effectively agrees with it: “Include BOTH, and clearly label which is which. Body measurements help customers who know their size. Garment measurements help compare to existing clothes. Clear labeling prevents confusion and returns.”
In practice that means four things. Two clearly headed tables rather than one ambiguous one. Per-item garment measurements rather than a single site-wide chart, because a boxy tee and a fitted shirt in the same catalogue genuinely differ. A stated fit intention, so a shopper knows whether five inches of ease is the point or a mistake. And a note on fabric and stretch, since that determines whether ease should be positive or negative.
Doing that per item by hand across a catalogue is tedious, which is why this is usually handled by tooling. Clean Canvas’s size chart app for Shopify is one of the options in that category; sizechart.shop, quoted throughout this article, is another. We have not installed or tested either, and the reason for mentioning tooling at all is that the recommendation above is a maintenance problem before it is a technology problem.
Measuring, in about two minutes
For your body, Grivet Outdoors give the instruction that matters most: keep the tape parallel to the floor, and measure around the fullest part of the chest or bust. Do the same at the natural waist and the fullest part of the hip, standing normally rather than holding your breath, and write the numbers down so you never have to do it again.
For a garment, lay it flat and buttoned, smooth it out, and measure straight across from seam to seam, then double it if you want a circumference to compare against a body measurement. Chest across the widest point below the armhole, waist at the narrowest, length from the high point of the shoulder. The point is not precision to the millimetre. It is having numbers from a garment you already know fits.
On labels, TAAS give the common alpha to numeric mapping: extra small around a 0 to 2, small a 4 to 6, medium an 8 to 10, large a 12 to 14, extra large a 16 to 18. They also note that for larger sizes the gap between grades widens, suggesting a 2.5 to 4 inch difference. Both are their figures and both are conventions rather than standards, which by now should not be surprising.
What this page cannot tell you
How much better labelling reduces returns. Nobody on this search publishes a figure for that, and rather than borrow one from an adjacent category, it is worth stating the gap plainly. Better charts remove one specific, identifiable confusion. What that is worth on your catalogue depends on your product mix, and the only way to find out is to change the charts on a randomised portion of traffic and compare return rates against the portion you left alone.
Two other things sit outside this page deliberately. Sewing pattern work, grading, toiles and bust adjustments are covered properly by Sussex Seamstress and are a making problem rather than a buying one. And brand-to-brand conversion tables are absent for the reason given earlier: they convert between labels that carry no reliable information, and they rot.
